I want to start an online business with affiliate marketing, but I don’t know where to start making it legal. I know I’ll have to register it as a business and pay taxes, but where do I begin? I want to do it as more of a hobby – to use my writing degree and maybe make some extra money. Does anyone have an affiliate marketing business? How did you start up?

Thanks for the question. In order to run a "legal" affiliate marketing business, it would be wise to begin promoting products offered through major affiliate networks. These are communities of merchants and affiliates that provide thousands of products for affiliates to promote and handle all of the complicated money issues for you. Most of these major affiliate networks will not deduct your taxes from your earnings automatically – instead they provide you with tax statements at the end of the year and send copies to the IRS.

One of the best major affiliate networks is Clickbank, which is the largest affiliate network of high quality informational products. Clickbank, In addition, to providing you with tax statements at the end of the year on your earnings, will also ask for an employer’s Identification number (EIN) when you register. An EIN is easily obtained by applying online at the IRS website.
