Shared Web Hosting

Shared Web Hosting :

Fan websites that do not sell products but are devoted to a particular celebrity;
* Personal websites that are used to keep in touch with family members all over the country;
* Self promotion websites, such as those that post your resume or art;
* Small business websites that sell a service where the client calls your phone number;
* Small business websites that sell specialty items and do not generate a lot of traffic.

These sites will do well with shared service hosting. The way shared web hosting works is that the server hosts many different websites that all share the space and bandwidth. The above websites are typical examples of those that can benefit from a shared service website that costs little money to maintain each month as well as low start up costs.

Businesses that need a dedicated server include the following examples:

- Dating sites

- Large product sale sites

- A law firm website for employees

- A corporate website for employees only

- Large social networking sites that rely on ad revenue

If you are looking for cheaper dedicated servers, you should be careful while choosing the right specification and package. Things to consider are operating system, data backup and monitoring service, hardware options, space, bandwidth and technical support. Ask the hosting providers to give you a few websites for references, read hosting reviews before you sign up and be sure that the price is affordable.

    What are the positives and negatives of selecting shared hosting?
    What are the positives and negatives of selecting shared hosting. Given the choice of shared hosting or dedicated hosting, which would you choose and why?

    > What are the positives and negatives of selecting shared hosting.

    Pro: Cheap
    Con: Less featureful, less secure, resources are shared.

    > Given the choice of shared hosting or dedicated hosting, which would you choose and why?

    Depends on what the hosting was for.

    Few months ago my dad’s company chose shared hosting over dedicated. Personally I was surprised with dad’s decision since dedicated hosting are much better than shared, so I asked him about it and why, and here what I concluded.

    First thing I’d like to say is, Shared hosting is better and have the first priority in web hosting companies than Dedicated since there will be more complainers if it went down or anything bad happend ;)

    Shared Hosting~
    › PROS ‹
    ► Cheap.
    ► If by any chance it crashed, you have your other mates (probably 20 other users) who will complain and the server it will up by the web hosting own company in no time.
    ► Firewalls, Flash, PHP, MySQL and everything else is already installed free and ready to get used.

    › CONS ‹
    ► To be honest, I can’t find any con about it since I couldn’t find any trouble with it plus that I have 2 main .com domains and 27 sub domains, and it runs very smooth and fast plus that every domain and sub got a forum running on each one of them.

    Dedicated Hosting~
    › PROS ‹
    ► Faster in loading.
    ► Sometime can handle a DDoS attack if you have some haters.
    ► Great for hosting Game Servers or any kind of that servers.

    › CONS ‹
    ► You have to install the firewall on your own, and it must be original and validated.
    ► You have to install your own AntiVirus and it must be original and validated.
    ► You have to install your own add-ons and plug-ins.
    ► Improving RAMs/CPU can cost a lot.
    ► It needs lots of money to keep up.
    ► If it crashed, you will never know until you check your website/server by your own since the only moderator will be you.

    Finally, I think he chose the Shared server rather than dedicated because his company doesn’t have any gaming servers or any kind of that server and secondly he doesn’t need that ‘hi-tech’ thing because only he need is a forum, a normal PHP files, and some mails at his domain. xD

    If your site is not so large(less than 500 pages) and gets few hundreds of customers every month then spending on a dedicated hosting is a waste of money. Shared hosting is very much cheaper than dedicated hosting.

    The positives of a shared hosting is its low cost. If you are starting out it just makes sense.
    As your requirements grow and your website becomes succesful go for a Dedicated Server.
    A dedicated server is more expensive and unless you get a managed server you would need to have technical knowledge to maintain the server up to date in terms of security.
